Beach day!

Image
We started today without a plan.... Nothing unusual there! We ended up at the beach. Easy to do on an island.  We started at starfish beach.  Very pretty, but no facilities.  We walked around a bit then headed back to water cay public beach.  That one has a bathroom and showers.  We got changed into bathing suits there and looked for someplace to hang out.  We ended up at rum point.  What a great place.  It's super clean. It has bathrooms, showers, restaurants, lounge chairs and hammocks.  It was a great place to spend the day.  We snorkeled and saw tons of fish including a sting ray.  Bubba even saw a lion fish.  We swam through a huge school of fish.  This place probably gets crowded when the cruise ships are in, it certainly has that feel of a cruise ship place.  We had a snack, not the best food, but Tracey loved her banana daiquiri! It's our last day, too depressing... I think we're going out for pizza.

Oh no, day 6 of 7

I can't believe we are already this far into our vacation!  Today we drove back to Hell to have our passports stamped from Hell then we went in search of a beach.  I can't say we've seen any bad beaches, but with the sea weed problem, some are better than others.  Some, including the one we are staying on are so full of sea weed that you would have to swim about 30 feet out just to get through it.  I like to be able to see what I'm swimming through or what might be in the water with me.  We started at cemetery beach, which was beautiful but no changing rooms.  Since none of us were in swim suits we kept driving.  The next one had changing rooms (well, a bathroom) so we stayed.  It was called smith barcadere.  Again beautiful, no sea weed, but the waves were crazy.  We floated around a bit and went in search of the next one.  Someone told us there are a lot of turtles at spot beach, so that was our next stop.  Another beautiful ...

Day 5

Bubba and I went scuba diving today.... As always it was spectacular! We went with Tortuga at Morritt's ..... Note to self, they do not let you take off the equipment in the water, so it is a long heavy 5 steps out to the boat.  Excellent canyons to glide through, but we both had issues with buoyancy so we only went through the last one. A one tank dive was $75 Cayman. Tracey hung out in the pool while we were just off shore.  The waves were crazy!  Off to dinner now, I'm starved!  Ok, so to finish off the day we ate at Tukka.  Huge birds were being fed from the beach when we got there.  The birds would swoop down and take food right from the people's hands.  I don't know if I would have dealt well with that, it looked like an Alfred Hitchcock movie!  The food was great.  Bubba had both kangaroo meat and lion fish, so he can cross two more off his food bucket list.... I don't think he really liked either one.  I almost forgot, the full m...

4 days in

Does that mean we are closer to the end of vacation than the beginning?  I do miss my dogs, but other than that I wouldn't mind extending vacation, oh well!  Today we went to the Queen Elizabeth Botanical Gardens again, and this time it wasn't raining! Yay! At 11 am most days they have a Blue Iguana tour it's $30 Cayman per person and you get to go behind the scenes of the breeding facility of the Blue Iguanas.  They were on the brink of extinction before the program, but now they have been upgraded with over 900 released back into the wild.  It sounds like their program is working.  Admission to the botanical garden is included, so we spent quite a bit of time roaming around their grounds.  My only complaint- it was HOT!  There are a lot of trees so it's not too hard to find shade, but it was still hot.  We took lots of photos, but it's supposed to be better in the spring.  They have a whole section of orchids, but it's the wrong time of the...

Day 3

Image
So we started off the day with the intention of going to the Queen Elizabeth Botanical Gardens, but nature got in the way.  We drove to it, and on the way the skies opened up yet again and it didn't seem to be letting up.  We drove there anyway, parked, got out of the car and walked to the information center.  The information we received was not what we wanted to hear.  The ladies heard it would be off and on rain all day.  Not the kind of weather to walk around a garden.  So, back to the car and we started our drive to Hell.  It's one building with a small rock formation behind it.  Not much to see, but we did send our postcards from Hell, I think family and friends will get a kick out of it.  Back to the car again and we had lunch on the beach.  It was called Alfresco's.  The food was just ok, but the view was spectacular.  Off again, and this time we found the national forest.  It's mostly mangroves, and Tracey ha...

First two days in Grand Cayman

Image
We flew in on Friday, the day before our time share because the flights looked much better than Saturday.  Working for an airline does have great perks, but you can't always get where you want when you want to.  We stayed in a Holiday Inn express overnight.  What a great find.  You definitely need a car to stay there, but it's right on the beach and has a nice pool.  There's a pier that goes out into the water with beach chairs at the end.  What an awesome spot to relax.  That's what an island vacation is all about, isn't it?  We ate at a place called Coconut Joe's.  They have fried pickles, yum! Bubba had a burger that was too tall to fit in his mouth and I had a veggie wrap with roasted pumpkin. We shopped for a few groceries at a place called Kirk's.  The prices are reasonable for an island, but the Grand Camanian dollar is worth more than US money, so be careful of what you spend.  Saturday we drove back to the airport to...
