Halloween Horror Nights

We started our yearly pilgrimage to Universal's Halloween event yesterday by getting out of bed at 3:30.  Now, remember I work nights, but I did get out of work early and managed to get about 4 hours of sleep.  So, as all good plans go, we couldn't get on the nonstop out of Boston to Orlando, so we went to Detroit.  There we couldn't get on the flight to Orlando either, so we ended up in Jaxsonville and drove 2 hours to the park. Along the way, we stopped in St Augustine for the 5 cent tour.  We saw the fort, the down town, drove over the Lion's bridge and stopped for about 15 minutes at the light house.  Quick tour, but then we headed back to the highway for the rest of our drive.
We managed to get to Orlando without too much hassle, although we did drive through a rain storm that slowed us down to a crawl.
The Universal Halloween was great as usual.  Bubba and Brian managed to see all 8 houses, while Jimmy and I saw just 3.  We saw the tribute to the Rocky Horror Picture Show which was great.  We even got to "do the time warp again, just a jump to the left and a step to the right" etc, it was fun.  The only ride we went on was the Minions, then we closed the place at 1:00.  Another night of no sleep, we left on an 11:00 flight in the morning... Whew! Another whirlwind weekend!

Shipshewana, IN

Today we went to the Amish town of Shipshewana. It always seems odd to see horse drawn black buggies driving along the streets with all the cars and trucks. The town has a small central area that is full of shops. You could buy a quilt in any color of the rainbow, and some of them do have all the colors. They are kind of pricey, but if you think about how much energy it must take to make such an intricate work of art without electricity, can be just mind boggling. Furniture is another big one here, but it won't fit under the seat on the airplane. Today was Len's 70th birthday. Happy birthday Len! It's hard to believe I have a 70 year old brother! Well, we're leaving tomorrow, so it's off to bed....

Barbados

Again we started the day not really knowing what we wanted to do, but we had read about George Washington's House and thought that might be interesting. We went out for the day with Judy and Ben and got our own taxi tour.  It was nice that it was just the four of us, but the driver/tour guide was hard to understand.  He tried his hardest though.  It was $25 each and we ended at Washington's house.  It was a nice take.  He lived on Barbados for a few months when he was 19 and was trying to find a cure for his older 1/2 brother's TB. There are tunnels underneath the compound that were installed long after Washington's stay.  They were built for drainage and only rediscovered 5 years ago. It was an interesting tour.  Today is our last day and it's a day at sea.  I'm tired and I miss my dogs, but it's snowing right now at home, so I guess 80 degree weather is pretty nice. Let's see if we get on a plane tomorrow.

Puerto Rico, here we come!

I don't remeber exactly why we picked Puerto Rico for this trip, but so far it was a good choice. We got on the first flights we tried, we fly standby with my job, and got here in time for lunch Saturday afternoon. The one disapointment we've run into was with the car rental. We rented from EZ, which we do frequently in Florida, but this was horrible. We waited over 1/2 an hour for the shuttle bus, even though the office was under 10 minutes away, then in the office it took over two hours to get through the line. It didn't even look very busy. On top of all that we were bullied into taking the transponder for the tolls which was another $50. The agent told us that if we didn't activate it and even if we paid the tolls in cash we would still get billed for using the toll booth and at that point it would be at least $50 for each infraction! Really??? It sounded like a BS story to me, but we took it anyway. I have to send a nasty-gram to EZ to let them know how ...
